Now when it comes to brand names, Honeywell is a common name associated with thermostats. From making normal conventional thermostat systems, Honeywell has been gaining quite a bit of ground with their new line of Smart Wifi capable thermostats. Check out our comprehensive Honeywell Wifi Smart Thermostat Review 2019 below to guide your purchase decision for your comfort at home.
Honeywell Smart Thermostat Review | What we like about it
Overall, the new Honeywell Wifi Smart Thermostat (Model : RTH9585WF1004) is quite a capable programmable thermostat system. The system comes with a relatively easy on the eye onscreen interface, and its companion smartphone app is easy to use. It’s customizable color touch screen and a simple, DIY set up sets it apart from the pack. You can control the thermostat using the touch screen and literally change the background color to your fancy to match your paint color or personal preferences.
It’s also a great smart thermostat for all ages at home to adjust the thermostat settings without a learning curve. It’s neat LCD screen and silver color case is also pretty elegant aesthetically.
However, on the downside it has a relatively short warranty, and its automatic scheduling features are limited to a quick questionnaire that helps it learn your preferences. Unlike the Nest Learning Thermostat and ecobee4, it doesn’t have motion sensors to detect when you enter a room.
Still, it’s a good standalone Wifi capable, smart thermostat if you don’t plan to have an overly, extensive smart home setup. You can buy this for under about $160 from Amazon, which is a pretty good deal as far as smart thermostat prices go.
Honeywell Smart Thermostat Review | Installation
This thermostat would require a C-Wire to be pre-installed. If you don’t have one, you would need to get one installed. Do keep this in mind before you commit to getting it. If you don’t already have a C-Wire installed, you could get one for under USD 20 HERE.
The Face Plate pins to connect to base are rather small in size and look a tad fragile. It would require some care to be plugged in. Other that that, the installation is pretty striaght forward and can be easily accomplished in under 20 minutes with simple tools. Honeywell also cleverly provides little stickers to wrap around each wire as you take them off the from an old device, so you know which terminal they were attached to. It’s also easy to connect the wires to this device because it uses push terminals instead of the typical screws.
Honeywell Smart Thermostat Review | Operation & Features
This wireless Honeywell Smart Thermostat is compatible with systems that use up to two heating stages and two cooling stages. Being a multistage thermostat for both hot and cold is great for controlling most 2 stage gas furnaces at home.
When the thermostat detects problems with your heater or air conditioner, it displays an orange alert button on the home screen. It also displays simple on-screen alerts when it is time to change the air filters. The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat also displays outside weather conditions so you can plan for your day. Unlike the Nest Learning Thermostat and ecobee4 though, it doesn’t have motion sensors to detect when you enter a room, though it’s not necessarily a deal-breaker.
It’s wireless connectivity is solid and we had no issues with signal drops or intermittent connections. It’s wireless setup is also intuitive and pretty straight-forward.
You can also set up different programs for each day of the week. To establish your settings, the thermostat asks a series of questions such as “Is someone home all day?” and “What temperature do you prefer when you are sleeping?”
Once programmed, this smart thermostat is largely self-sufficient, turning your heating and air conditioning units on and off without any further action from you. Honeywell’s Total Connect Comfort app (which is avaialble FREE), allows you to turn your home’s temperature up or down from anywhere in the world using your smartphone.
The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat works with quite a few smart home platforms. You can also link your Honeywell Total Connect Comfort account to Amazon’s Alexa to control the unit with your voice via an Amazon Echo.
Honeywell Smart Thermostat Review | Summary
With its large touchscreen display, the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart is quite attractive and easy to use. It is one of the best-designed models we reviewed. Unlike most Wi-Fi thermostats, you can match the screen’s background color to your decor. In addition, the keypad locks so you can control who can change the temperature at home.
Honeywell’s customer support resources are good but not the best in our comparison. If you have questions, you can consult videos and manuals on the Honeywell website. You can also contact the company by social media, email, phone and live chat if you have other questions. The one-year warranty on this unit is below average compared to the two- and three-year warranties provided by competitors.
